I was asked by the Committee if it was possible to alleviate some of the restrictions in the policy with regard to reporting use of the inhaler to the school nurse.
The following language is from Code and mandates that all students report usage to the school nurse.
(b) The policy under this section shall require a child of school age that desires to possess and self-administer an asthma inhaler in a school setting to demonstrate the capability for self-administration and for responsible behavior in the use thereof and to notify the school nurse immediately following each use of an asthma inhaler. The school entity shall develop a system whereby the child may verify to the school nurse that the child is capable of self- administration and has permission for carrying and taking the medication through the use of the asthma inhaler. The school entity shall also restrict the availability of the asthma inhaler and the prescribed medication contained therein from other children of school age, with immediate confiscation of both the asthma inhaler and the medication and loss of privileges if the school policies are abused or ignored.

Recommended Action :
That the Board of School Directors approves the pre-K transition plan as part of our partnership with the local Early Care and Education Coalition.
Public Content
The state has asked that each Early Care and Education Coalition state wide have a Pre-K transition plan approved by any school boards with which they work. This is a non-binding plan. This local plan has evolved over time through work by the Coalition with our elementary principals and kindergarten teachers with pre-K and Headstart teachers. This is a menu of options already being successfully implemented. The purpose of this plan is to make each child's transition from the pre-K setting into the public school setting as seamless and successful as possible.

3.2 Use of District Buildings for After School Childcare

Recommended Action :
That the Board of School Directors approve the contract to permit Jefferson-DeFrees Family Center to offer after school child care at the following schools: Russell Elementary, Beaty Warren Middle School, Youngsville Elementary Middle School and Sugar Grove Elementary School.
Public Content
The Jefferson-DeFrees Family Center has approached the District with a proposal for establishing after school care at several schools. Right now, the proposed schools are Russell, YEMS, Sugar Grove and Beaty. This would entail the use of probably one classroom at each site depending on parent response. The after school care would begin at approximately 3:00 p.m. and extend to 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. After school care is problematic for many parents and this may be a way to help them. Additionally, this would also be a way to support more students staying for after school tutoring. All parent fees, guidelines, etc., would be established by Jefferson-DeFrees. Any needed insurance would be the responsibility of Jefferson-DeFrees. Attorney Byham has reviewed the attached contract and it meets with his approval.
