Administration has been asked to follow up on the implications of the changes made to Policy 9743 at the end of the 08-09 school year on the Class of 2010. If the Board were to approve the motion, we would run rank according to the current Policy 9743 and establish Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Historian. We would then run another rank calculation based on the December 2008 version of Policy 9743 where the district utilized .5 credits for a 3 credit college course. If that rank calculation resulted in a different Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Historian, then those students would be awarded a Co-Valedictorian, Co-Salutatorian, or Co- Historian status. This second rank calculation would not take anything away from the first calculation, and students from that first calculation would not be drop in rank.

As a part of the Strategic Planning process required by the state, the Special Education plan was required to address the drop-out rate of special education students. The Special Education Department elected to do this by implementing the nationally recognized, research based program called Check and Connect. An in-service session was held for two days in August. Teachers, community agencies, administrators and other guests were invited to attend and offer their input in the WCSD development of the program.
The Special Education Supervisors and Director have been facilitating the program since the beginning of the year by holding weekly or bi-weekly team meetings within the buildings to identify potential drop-outs and ensure that additional supports are provided to these students to help them be successful. Now that the semester mark has passed, it seems that a dedicated staff member who could spend more time working with families, calling absent students first thing in the morning to verify their absence with their parents, monitor student grades and homework completion and just provide a more intensive one-to-one focus would be beneficial to many of these students.
It seemed reasonable to contract with a local agency for those services. Beacon Light currently has the contract to provide our SAP services and the mentor could be hired as an extension of the SAP contract using the addendum that is provided as an attachment.
An attachment of the duties and responsibilties of the Student Mentor is outlined in the attachment.
